Babysitting my 16-yr-old student hasn't been easy. Especially since I'm not the patient sort. I can't be with her the whole time so whenever she's doing any independent work I have that heart in the mouth feeling. (despite meticulous instruction, something goes wrong/she will ask a question that tells me something will go wrong if I don't intervene).

I forgot to add/boast: I upgraded to 2gb ram for free, got myself 3 installations of microsoft office 2007 for 99sgd, and a free mouse (the one in the photos). and the S10-2 uses an Atom processor 280. tt’s 1.66ghz cp to its predecessor’s 1.60. hehehe. i hear its minimally better but heck, doesn’t hurt to have the better one.

one gripe though. the 6-cell battery’s not flat like the 3-cell, and sticks out. But at least its arched so there’s not a solid thing stuck to the bottom of the computer, and as a whole, with battery, the machine still looks dam beautiful. i left the batt downstairs so no photo of it on…

I've been busy

Basically, the past week has been really busy and that's why I haven't updated my blog. You see, I'm trying to publish a scientific paper now. This is the 8th lab I am working in and still Zero first or second author papers in my name. That's lousy! I'm 24, almost...some ppl publish much younger than that. Alright, my previous stints were maybe a few months to half a yr at most, but the latest one was a year long. Although I managed to publish (sth like 7th author in a list of like 10+ authors in an impact factor 4+ journal and 3rd author on a review paper in another lousy-average journal) still, my achievements have been rather mediocre. Most importantly, I don't feel like I mastered the field, or even feel like I can speak intelligently on my former area of research in that lab.

My current stint in a molecular oncology lab is nearing full-term, just about 11 months. At least I get to handle my own project in this lab. I'm working towards publishing my own paper although it's prolly gonna be in another mediocre journal . However I feel like I've learnt a lot from the whole process.

Besides being busy repeating experiments and tidying up my data, I was also given two students to look after in the lab. One is a new grad student who's actually a yr older than I. He's pretty independent, so my presence is minimally needed. The other, however, is a 16-yr-old who is not interested in research but who was forced into a 4-week stint at my lab by her father, who is a PI and whose lab we're collaborating with. So, as you can guess, I'm also kinda obliged to take good care of her in view of these political ties. I was partially flattered to be 'named' her babysitter at first, but that quickly fizzled when I realized that babysitting a bored 16-yr-old ABC (american born chinese) is no fun at all. Especially when i have my own work to do, and a lot of it at that.

In addition, I have 3 months to write a review paper for my boss. He's giving me the opportunity to author a review, with his guidance, which I think is invaluable. I feel indebted to him for the time and effort he's putting into grooming me.

Although...I will still keep my options open for which lab to join for my PhD. I feel like I will be neeeding greater breadth, bigger clout, and deeper expertise for my PhD lab. But I will feel guilty for abandoning my old boss.

I realize I haven't written anything personal in a while. Well, something happened yesterday that was out of the ordinary for me... I saw people 'speak in tongue' for the first time at a church. They just started talking in a really really weird 'language' that Christians believe is the language of the angels? I think. Well, if ur interested u can read more about it here. Anyway, one guy spoke in really funny tongue, cos he went "@#$%^&*()(*&^%$#@#$%^&- la la la la". Those four last words were indeed, la la la la. I admit I embellished that part with a "tra"lalala when I narrated the events of the night to my colleague the next morning, traumatized as I still was. but "la la la la" were truly his last four tongue words.

I don't know if I believe this whole business. I try not to be too judgemental but I am human, and I am 24 (almost)... no longer plastic. And maybe I've been in my own scientific world for too long and I'm in too deep. But what I saw yesterday really disturbed me in the sense that, I just can't understand how people who look so normal and ordinary actually believe in something that looks so absolutely bonkers to me. It warps my sense of reality.

duno bout u, but tis is news to me. Imagine if we could simply turn those genes on and off at will by say, popping a pill...this is completely within human reach, I think. Science is potentially apocalyptic and awesome at the same time. Imagine if we never had to grow old. Earth would just die.
