Strong chair.

Can all chairs do that you think, or is that chair especially strong?

Wow, really? No smiling in your driver's license pic?

Geez. USA Today- Four states adopt 'no-smiles' policy for driver's licenses because
"Face-recognition software can fail to match two photos of the same person if facial expressions differ in each photo" and "It's probably safer from a national-security point of view"

Nest out of Nails

Well, this bird did good out of nails. and some dood did good by taking pictures of the whole process. Enjoy!

Scientists discover genes that slow aging.

From the Telegraph- read here.

duno bout u, but tis is news to me. Imagine if we could simply turn those genes on and off at will by say, popping a pill...this is completely within human reach, I think. Science is potentially apocalyptic and awesome at the same time. Imagine if we never had to grow old. Earth would just die.

Another interesting article on aging and developmental drift, if you're interested. Here's a short paragraph from it that sums up what I thought was exciting:

"If aging is not a cost of unavoidable chemistry but is instead driven by changes in regulatory genes, the aging process may not be inevitable. It is at least theoretically possible to slow down or stop developmental drift."

Watch this for the amazing directing.

This is a must-view. Somehow I couldn't embed this video, but here is the link.

Just look at this and feel peaceful.

Can't help it but post this picture. It is sooo cute.

Redbull contains trace amounts cocaine

Well, I think it is really no big deal to find trace amounts of cocaine in a can of Redbull cola. What I thought was more interesting was the fact that I have lived 23+ years of my life on this planet, but this is the first time I'm discovering that the word 'Coca' in "Coca-cola" refers to the plant from which cocaine is obtained. unbelievable.

Response to question on Ryan Commission Report (video)

An absolutely gripping, first-hand account, of a man's experience of abuse in an institution run by Ireland's churches. This almost brought a tear to my eye. Watch it. I hope his voice will finally be heard.

Animals can tell right from wrong

Article from Telegraph.co.uk:

"A laboratory experiment trained Diana monkeys to insert a token into a slot to obtain food.

A male who had grown to be adept at the task was found to be helping the oldest female who had not been able to learn how to insert the token.

On three occasions the male monkey picked up tokens she dropped and inserted them into the slot and allowed her to have the food."

Rape in Abu Ghraib

Stirring first-hand report of rape in Abu Ghraib.

It is NOT okay to sweep this under the rug. I would be very disappointed in the direction the world is heading.

Altruism is not solely a human trait

What I'm confused about is why humans have to assume that animals are any different from us. Why humans have to wait for someone to finally bother carrying out a scientific study before we are convinced otherwise.

I just want to hop into the future and finally say I TOLD YOU SO when people finally 'discover' that bugs have feelings too. Like how they discovered, recently, that crustaceans feel pain. Not so guiltless now after boiling that screaming lobster alive eh?

From CNN- Apparently some dude in China was holding up traffic while threatening to jump off a popular suicide bridge. One guy got so fed up he walked through the police cordon to get to the dude, gave him a handshake, then promptly pushed him off the bridge...onto an emergency air cushion. He then saluted the crowds.

Air-fueled batteries

University of St Andrews researchers have invented an air-fuelled battery that lasts ten times as long than the last one.
I hope, for the sake of the polar bears, that this technology will take off. ASAP.

Taken from somewhere else: Things My Girlfriend and I Have Argued About

excerpt: (hilarious and worth a read in its entirety)

She keeps making me carry tampons around - 'Here, have these, just in case.'
'Oooooooh, why can't
you carry them?'
'I've got no pockets.'
Then, of course, I forget about them. And the next time I'm meeting The Duchess of Kent or someone I pull a handkerchief out of my pocket and shower feminine hygiene products everywhere.

What you should do if you're in love with your friend but she already has a boyfriend.

You should totally try it, but try not to be arrested for breaking in.

Warning: This video will make your blood BOIL!

I don't know where who got this picture from, but DAM it is cute. Although I do feel for this child. I do...

Without going into a longwinded debate on whether circumcision should be allowed in minors, the caption for this photo went sth like: Kid cries while standing in line for his turn to be circumcised.

That's one kid who knows what's coming.

As you already know, Youtube removes pornographic videos after they are flagged by users. Well, apparently some pranksters at competitor video sites eBaum's World and 4chan started a motion for a 'mass porn "carpet bombing" on YouTube'. And they succeeded. Youtube was quite busy deleting porn videos yesterday. Freakin' hilarious.

Who protects the prisoners? =/

"Staff wouldn't push wheelchairs unless they were trained and staff wouldn't get themselves trained to push wheelchairs "

Makes me ponder. With all else that is happening around the world, (the current economic crisis, violence and terrorism, civil unrest and ongoing wars etc...), an unlikely group of people finds itself neglected and cast aside by society. At Parkhurst jail in the UK "...one disabled inmate had not showered for a year because staff had not helped him". !!!

This time the watchdog did its job well and changes are underway. But how many delinquent, irresponsible prisons slip through the cracks?

Tarantula Milkshake

Warning: This will be disturbing to spider lovers. The picture below doesn't enlarge when clicked on but a bigger pic can be viewed here.

Computer Hackers are scary!

This completely freaks me out. Trojan software that infects your computer when you try to download freeware off illegal websites. Someone out there will then be able to gain control over your webcam, view the webpages you are visiting, and obtain the history of your keystrokes which can reveal bank passwords and other sensitive information.

Beware- the era of technology reveals just enough for the layman to think he's got it under control when he is actually easy prey in an expert's playground.

From BBC news online: "Webcam under hacker's control"

$

I removed googleadsense. Am signing up for nuffnang following cowboycaleb's example. His blog I have followed for slightly more than a year, and is my favorite cham-cham blog for destressing/boredomkilling purposes. I am so far behind in the competition considering my two-person audience. Haha. We've all got to start somewhere... Maybe it'll take 10 years for me to earn $50. But that's ok. In 10 yrs' time, when I actually receive a $50 check, it would brighten my day.

Today I went scouting around for investment properties. I'm looking at the 6-700k range, which is quite limited to old private 2-3br apartments in the less than prime districts and studio apartments in the more desirable ones. I'm undecided as to which choice is better. Studio apartments are easier to rent out, but they can't fetch that high a price. 2-3br apartments away from civilisation...not easy to rent out. I'm looking because my mum wants to invest in property for passive income. She is getting freaked out by the thought that, with both her and my dad retired, and my sister and I still pursuing our graduate degrees, we'll one day all end up on the streets if we simply lived off our accumulated savings. I share the same fear. My income simply isn't enough to support a household of 7, especially at our current high standard of living. Having medical bills to pay suck too (but I have to say medicare helps a whole lot). And I, the last breadwinner of the family, will stop winning bread by August, when my course officially starts. I must do well, or risk losing my scholarship. So, I think I'll not dabble in part-time work while I'm studying...not even tuition.

according to my diligent calculations, I will only be, technically, a free person by 2027. That's 18 years. AGH! Meanwhile, I have to be contented with my slim paycheck. I don't think I'm being paid a fair salary right now. I don't. Sorry. Hopefully that will change in the future, although I know I'd still be earning less than what the job demands. NUS mbbs grads tell me, being a doctor in Singapore is both a thankless and financially unrewarding job (at least for the first 10 years). Scientists tell me a PhD makes zero financial sense either. Take the two and put them together and you get a clinician scientist who does double the work but paid one ordinary salary. I now know why so few people choose this path. But insane as it sounds, I am looking forward to it. After all the number of years in a person's life is limited, and i'm spendin mine wisely.

Phlegm in guys' throats

I wonder what makes guys produce more phlegm in their throats during the night so that in the morning when they wake up they have to make horrendous gurgling retch-inducing noises to clear it. gross. and over dramatic. i mean, does it really take that much effort to clear your throat? like you have to kill a cow to get air flowing through that tube again? geez man. gross. Just one of those things that irks me. Maybe all loud noises irk me.

Anyway, our lab's finally moving into the new building. It looks real grand from the outside, and much more spacious on the inside than what we currently have. In fact I think I have an entire bench to myself. woot! Moving time's always quite a relaxing time for a lab because experiments are on hold and the whole lab works together to decon and bubblewrap all our stuff. Feels great functioning as a team for a change. With all that talk of collaboration between labs/lab members/institutes, the real bulk of research work is still done alone. Sure there's plenty of interaction during discussions and in-between time, but in the end, your project is your responsibility alone. Unlike our current task. While we're moving, everyone works towards the same goal. To get our stuff over safely so we can start work again.

I don't know how to make my blog interesting. I'll think harder.

Google Adsense

I just signed up for googleadsense to see if i can make any money from having a blog. As of now only 2 people know about my blog, loris and SAyao. I don't want people who know me to frequent my blog. It's way more exciting to have an audience following my blog whom I don't already know. Complete strangers who find my stories interesting. I don't think anyone will find my blog interesting at the moment. But I wana see if I can make it so. Maybe I'll delete my previous posts and start again. This is so characteristic of me. Anyway, it is kind of like an experiment. To see if blogging can be lucrative. So far I've read that it's not. But then again I'm not a full-time blogger, and this shall just be a side experiment if you know what i mean. Fellow scientists might know what I mean. Like when you're working on a project you hope is worthy of a Nature publication, and you get some stray unexpected results that you think can form a smaller project so you just dabble in it at the side for backup. At least that's what PIs or postdocs do. Now, I'm just struggling to finish my own little project...and hopefully, finally, publish. gawd is it hard to publish. I WANT TO PUBLISH. i've got to admit sometimes that the loris is just way smarter than me. Puts in half the effort, and gets one first author paper and a patent within that one year of RA. I work weekends, and can barely throw together enough data for a publication. Tis life..

Mothers' day

This picture is nothing new and I've had it for some time. pulled it off the internet somewhere... i duno why, but sometimes i crave a wtf laugh and this one does it for me.

I'm nervous about my presentation tomorrow. Although it's just a journal club presentation and I'm not even presenting my own work, I'm still apprehensive about the audience. I know roughly who will turn up. those few PIs and heads who always ask questions that sound intelligent but that I don't always follow. and all my friends/colleagues/acquaintances at gms and ppl i don't know from ncc...

it will all be over soon.

anyway, today is mothers' day. my sister and i cooked an organic meal for our family.

it was very very very expensive, but worth it! We spent enough on the ingredients to get a membership card from the store. And of course, that was part of the mothers' day gift. :)
