This is a place for random musings and news that amuses me. But beware, it is also my emotional potty. Good luck!

This is why I want to be a clinician scientist.
Maybe one day I can discover something great, like this, if it is real.

Ohwells. It’s the season for buying (despite the recession)…
what recession? The pc show last thur-sunday was crowded as hell. I got my lenovo S10-2 netbook for 609sgd, a steal! Slim, sleek, and light. I luurrvee…………….
here are some pics…
The screen looks brighter in real life. This is just bad photography on my part….><
there are 3 usb ports and a vga? i forgot the name of that port but it connects to an external monitor…
At home i just hook it up to my external monitor and use a usb mouse…
it is super slim and light. i love it =P
and the power supply is smaller than a usual laptop’s too, see it’s just 3.5 inches long. I’ll be bringing this along to school for notes taking…
I forgot to add/boast: I upgraded to 2gb ram for free, got myself 3 installations of microsoft office 2007 for 99sgd, and a free mouse (the one in the photos). and the S10-2 uses an Atom processor 280. tt’s 1.66ghz cp to its predecessor’s 1.60. hehehe. i hear its minimally better but heck, doesn’t hurt to have the better one.
one gripe though. the 6-cell battery’s not flat like the 3-cell, and sticks out. But at least its arched so there’s not a solid thing stuck to the bottom of the computer, and as a whole, with battery, the machine still looks dam beautiful. i left the batt downstairs so no photo of it on…

I've been busy
My current stint in a molecular oncology lab is nearing full-term, just about 11 months. At least I get to handle my own project in this lab. I'm working towards publishing my own paper although it's prolly gonna be in another mediocre journal . However I feel like I've learnt a lot from the whole process.
Besides being busy repeating experiments and tidying up my data, I was also given two students to look after in the lab. One is a new grad student who's actually a yr older than I. He's pretty independent, so my presence is minimally needed. The other, however, is a 16-yr-old who is not interested in research but who was forced into a 4-week stint at my lab by her father, who is a PI and whose lab we're collaborating with. So, as you can guess, I'm also kinda obliged to take good care of her in view of these political ties. I was partially flattered to be 'named' her babysitter at first, but that quickly fizzled when I realized that babysitting a bored 16-yr-old ABC (american born chinese) is no fun at all. Especially when i have my own work to do, and a lot of it at that.
In addition, I have 3 months to write a review paper for my boss. He's giving me the opportunity to author a review, with his guidance, which I think is invaluable. I feel indebted to him for the time and effort he's putting into grooming me.
Although...I will still keep my options open for which lab to join for my PhD. I feel like I will be neeeding greater breadth, bigger clout, and deeper expertise for my PhD lab. But I will feel guilty for abandoning my old boss.

Touching story that gave me mixed emotions and I don't know the point of.
excerpt- "I killed my dad. I didn't blow him away with a gun. Instead, I let him die. I pulled a kitchen chair up next to him and watched him struggle to breathe on the floor. The skin on his face turned a reddish-purple. His neck took on a bluish tint. Both his hands clutched tightly at his chest. And suddenly, the white in his eyes became spider-web etched, in blood-red lines.
Why did I do it? It's complicated."

Two bullets collide in midair! Cool.
Two bullets that collided in mid air in 1854 - one Russian, one French...One in a billion chance? I duno...there were perhaps LOTS of bullets flying around during that war. Still, cool. Not the war.

WHOT? Construction Crew Severs Secret ‘Black Line’
Taken from an article from wired.com:
"A construction crew working on an office building in Virginia in 2000 severed a fiber optic cable that wasn’t on anyone’s map. Apparently it was a ‘black line’ used for carrying secret intelligence data, according to sources who spoke recently with the Washington Post."

My Late Term Abortion - by Gretchen Voss
While I'm not saying that I would do the same thing in her shoes, even taking into account the circumstances surrounding her decision, still, I thought the following paragraph taken from the article was pretty powerful.
"...in my case, everyone said it was the right thing to do — even my Catholic father and Republican father-in-law. Because suddenly, for them, it wasn't about religious doctrine or political platforms. It was personal -- their son, their daughter, their grandchild. It was flesh and blood, as opposed to abstract ideology, and that changed everything."
Speaking in Tongue
I don't know if I believe this whole business. I try not to be too judgemental but I am human, and I am 24 (almost)... no longer plastic. And maybe I've been in my own scientific world for too long and I'm in too deep. But what I saw yesterday really disturbed me in the sense that, I just can't understand how people who look so normal and ordinary actually believe in something that looks so absolutely bonkers to me. It warps my sense of reality.

The homeless stay wired
The internet allows the homeless to stay connected with society.
"When he realized he would be homeless, Mr. Livingston bought a sturdy backpack to store his gear, a padlock for his footlocker at the shelter and a $25 annual premium Flickr account to display the digital photos he takes."
werrrd. connectivity...it is that important. we are indeed social creatures.
